I will prioritize campus safety while protecting free expression and civil liberties. Students should feel secure in an inclusive learning environment and confident that their rights are respected. I am committed to upholding diversity, equity, and inclusion at every level so that all students, faculty members, and union members regardless of background, feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
I believe campus safety must be built on prevention, accountability, and support. Ensuring that campuses are safe places to learn and work is a top priority for me. A campus is a shared space where students, faculty, and service employees from all backgrounds come to study and work. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, appearance, or personal expression, every individual deserves to feel safe and respected. Everyone should be free to express their opinions and engage in peaceful advocacy without fear of arrest or academic discipline.
At Wayne State University, I will advocate and work with the university board and relevant authorities, including the general counsel’s office when appropriate, to ensure strong, fair, and enforceable safety policies. I will support improved safety infrastructure and staffing, clear and trusted reporting systems, regular training, strong protections for campus workers, expanded mental health resources, and meaningful collaboration with employees and unions.
I believe free speech, the right to protest, and the right to demonstrate are fundamental pillars of a democratic society. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the ability of individuals to express ideas, voice dissent, and advocate for change. At Wayne State University, I will work with the university board, administration, and the Office of the General Counsel to ensure these rights are upheld in alignment with university policy. I will support clear, fair, and consistently applied policies that protect free expression and peaceful protest, while ensuring campus security and commitment to nonviolence. Protecting free speech and the right to protest will strengthen dialogue, civic engagement, and accountability. It will ensure diverse voices are heard and help build a more inclusive, responsive, and democratic community at Wayne state.
I view DEI programs as essential to fostering a thriving academic community. At Wayne State, DEI is not just a principle—it is a practical strategy for strengthening learning, research, and the overall campus culture. As a board member, I would engage on these issues by supporting policies and programs that promote diversity in hiring and admissions, ensure equitable access to resources, and create inclusive environments for learning and collaboration. I would listen to the perspectives of faculty, staff, and students, hold leadership accountable for measurable DEI outcomes, and advocate for initiatives that remove systemic barriers so everyone can succeed. By actively championing DEI, the board can help Wayne State remain a university where innovation, equity, and excellence go hand in hand.
